Primary
The school follows both the British National Curriculum and the
curriculum standards of the United States. The American Academy’s
primary education concentrates on the development of the basic skills
of literacy and numeracy. Emphasis is also given to science, social
studies, physical education, art, and music. All lessons are taught
in English with the exception of 6 periods per week of Greek language
to all students of Greek descent, and French to all other pupils.
Class size is limited to 22 pupils per class and individual or small
group English as a Second Language instruction is provided for non-native
speakers of English as needed.
Secondary
The Academy offers 14 courses of study leading to the IGCSE (Cambridge
University) GCE (London University) “0” level exams.
These courses are: English, English Literature, Greek, French, Computer
Science, Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Accounting, Economics,
History, Bible, and Sociology.
We also offer 10 courses leading to the GCE “A” or “AS” level examinations.
These courses are: English Literature, Greek, French, Computer Science,
Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Accounting, and Economics.
The
secondary school offers IGCSE, GCE “O”, and Cambridge “AS” and “A”
level university preparatory courses. The American Academy Nicosia
is a CIE Attached Center. The school also offers a commercial studies
program following LCCI course materials.

A school uniform is required and must be worn in complete and correct
form for all classes and school activities.

For
Physical Education classes all students must wear the school shorts
or a tracksuit. In addition, during the warmer months, Primary students
may wear the school cotton shorts.
Students
who represent the school in community events or parades will be
required to wear the school tie and blazer. The school provides
these for the students, but students must buy their own white dress
shirt or blouse.
Student
Appearance
The overall appearance of a student is important. Showy jewelry,
piercing, hair color, unusual hairstyle and excessive make-up are
not permitted. Boys must have hair that is cut short and properly
trimmed on the top and around the ears. Facial hair is not permitted.
American
Academy graduates have attended and graduated from universities
in countries all over the world including the United States,
Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, and Greece
– to name but a few. Others choose to attend the local private
colleges or the University of Cyprus. Many of those who study
locally then choose to continue their education by doing their
Master or Doctorate degrees abroad.

The
American Academy has Academic and Career counseling available to
students. Students are given information on university entrance
requirements and programs and the resulting career opportunities.
Counseling is also provided to students interested in specialized
careers that require advanced technical training. University, technical
training and career counseling includes information on careers in
all European Union countries, the Middle East, Canada and the United
States.
