The
American Academy Nicosia is beginning its 85th year of providing
high quality educational services in Cyprus. As Principal, I welcome
you to our web site and hope the information that you receive gives
you a better understanding of the school’s qualities, mission and
goals. As a school administrator with many years of experience,
I realize the complexities involved in providing a total educational
experience. That is why the American Academy aims to equip students
with academic and intellectual skills, the ideals to underpin their
moral and ethical choices and the security and self-confidence to
develop fully integrated personalities.
The
American Academy was founded in 1922 as a finishing school.
At a time when women were not admitted into most professions
and often weren’t even allowed a proper education, the American
Academy led the way by providing an English education for
the daughters of many of Nicosia’s prominent citizens.
In 1976 the school
was turned over to a local council and in 1977 the school
was made co-educational. Graduates of the Academy have excelled
in many professions. Some have become research specialists
in the fields of physics, genetics, medicine and ecological
study, while others have been involved in the national government
and international politics, business, and commerce. |

The American Academy
attempts to help students reach their full potential in all areas.
Students receive individual attention in small classes, are given
moral and ethical instruction in Bible classes and morning assemblies,
and are encouraged to develop their talents through a variety of
curricular and extra-curricular activities. Of course priority is
given to academics but other aspects of school life are also given
emphasis including sports, art, music, drama, cultural heritage,
debating, and writing. We believe that extra-curricular activities
help build self-confidence in our students, as well as help to develop
teamwork and leadership skills.
The Academy aims to
equip students with the necessary tools to face life and earn their
rightful place in society, by developing the interests and skills
necessary for their chosen profession, and by presenting them with
the ideals necessary for their proper development as fully integrated
personalities.
Our teaching staff
are all highly qualified, and selected not only based on their academic
qualifications but also on their ability to communicate with and
provide proper role models for our students.
Our teachers have all
been approved by the Ministry of Education and Culture, and they
are all graduates of universities with B.A., B.Sc., M.A., M. Sc.
or Ph.D. degrees.
The Academy believes
in life-long learning and so provides its teaching staff with in-service
education on a regular basis. The administration also encourages
the teachers to take advantage of the many seminars, workshops,
and courses that are offered locally by colleges, universities,
and other educational organizations.
